The city has been named after Patreas, the leader of the Achaeans, and during the Roman era it has been a cosmopolitan center. Apostle Andrew taught and martyred in this city and there is a magnificent church dedicated to him, with Byzantine icons and part of the Saint's cross.

Today, Patras, with its port and Araxos' airport is a center that draws thousands of visitors that head to the Peloponnese, the Ionian Islands, Italy and other European countries, while upon the completion of Rion-Antirion Bridge Peloponnese will be linked to the rest of Greece.

The beautiful region of Western Peloponnese is an ideal place for family and alternative tourism with marvelous rivers, sheer beaches and many natural beauties.

Patras is also famous for its Carnival.
